The Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD) was established comprising of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda under the idea of resolving common problems like drought and desertification that were ravaging the region through collective efforts.

Mr. Nuur Mohamed Sheik - Seniour Political AdviserIGAD joined the African Union, European Union and representatives from Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan and participants representing wide range of interests at the world famous foreign policy institute – Chatham House at a one-day conference that examined the role of youth in the future of the Horn of Africa at which speakers from Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan will discussed how to foster youth engagement with government on key issues such as peace-building and reconciliation, education and employment.

On 13th September 2021, the IGAD COVID-19 response team held a field monitoring visit in Adjumani district, Uganda in collaboration with National Ministry of Health, Adjumani district local Authority and EU-IGAD-COVID-19 partners; UNICEF and IOM for advocacy and monitoring of field activities by the partners. Adjumani district as a refugee host district continues to receive support from the EU-IGAD COVID-19 response to mitigate the health and socioeconomic impact of COVID-19.

31 August 2020 (ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia): The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in partnership with the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), today held a handover ceremony of supplies and equipment worth 14 million Euros within the framework of the broader 60 million Euros package of the EU Response to Health and Socio-economic Impact of COVID-19 in the IGAD Region at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

(May 15, 2020 (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) The Minister of Health of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, HE Dr. Lia Tadesse, received personal protection equipment from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). This in-kind support is part of the regional response to fight the COVID-19 epidemic and will benefit the cross-border sites, refugee camps and Internal Displaces Persons.

April 10, 2020 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, yesterday held a video teleconference for the Finance Ministers of the Member States in the footsteps of the IGAD Ministers of Health meeting of April 8 and IGAD virtual Summit on COVID-19 of March 30.

April 6, 2020 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, this morning handed over a cheque worth USD 100,000 (about 17,775,000 Djibouti Franc) to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Djibouti, Mr Mohamed Ali Hassan, as a gesture of solidarity from the staff members of the regional organisation towards the Republic of Djibouti in its fight against the COVID-19.
