14-11-2017, Galkacyao, Somalia: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) through its Special Mission to Somalia (SMS) has organized a two-day Consensus Building Preparatory workshop for peace-building and the implementation of the different ceasefire and peace agreements signed between Puntland and Galmudug Administrations over Galkacyo disputes. The workshop ended today in Galkacyo, Somalia.
The workshop brought together Governors and Mayors of Puntland and Galmudug regions separately with their respective peace committees to jointly discuss and recommend a roadmap to bring a lasting peace to the two regions. The representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia, Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, the IGAD Special Mission to Somalia, and the Governor of each region chaired the meeting Jointly. The participants recommended the way forward and expressed the needs for the Federal Government, IGAD, and the International Community to sustain and build peace among the two regions.
IGAD reaffirms its commitment to continuously work with the Federal Government as well as with the Puntland and the Galmudug Administrations to find a lasting solution to the disputes that have often led to violent conflicts with negative ramifications for humanitarian, economic and social cohesion. IGAD calls upon Puntland and Galmudug Administrations to proactively support the Peace Committees to fully engage in the upcoming peace-building efforts. Further, IGAD thanks the international community for rendering critical support to the process.
IGAD remains committed to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in its mandate to build peace, security, and stability in Somalia.
